In a class that I was in today, a classmate next to me opened up her Google Calendar (complete with tabbed events in 10 different colors) and I realized that if I cross my eyes slightly, her calendar almost resembles the pointillist works of Seurat. I realized in college over the last two years that this lack of organization was partly due to never getting used to having a planner (I jot it down and never open the planner again), but mainly due to apathy and laziness. Ive realized that the philosophy which works the best for me is, well, if I cant remember the event, then it must not be important enough in the first place. And thus Ive mentally justified my use of not using schedulers or planners. :P (dont worry this just means i have to prioritize earlier) I do keep a Post-It pad with me on my desk and in my backpack. When I have to remember really important events (like where my classes are meeting or my advisers phone number), I usually write them down on a Post-It note, and then stick it somewhere where Ill remember to look at (like on the wall, or in my pocket most of the timehaha). In defense of not using a schedule, I think my primary reason is that I enjoy the feeling of spontaneity in a day. I enjoy not having everything laid out in a regimented fashion on a sheet of paper or on a screen. Theres a certain peace of mind about thinking that right now Im living in THIS moment, without thinking about the classes, the meetings, and other events that Ill need to be rushing off to later. Which is also sometimes why I slip off and just amble along the Charles during the pauses in my days since getting back to Boston (the river is beautiful now). Theres a certain serenity and peace about grasping on to those little pauses during the day something that I know will be much harder to do once I enter The Real World after the next two years. Well, so for everyone non-frosh, this Tuesday was Reg Day, where we go meet with our advisers and register for the classes that weve pre-reged for and which we will be taking for the upcoming semester. Well, the thing is, now that having finished most of the biology core requirements, I have a lot of space for electives, and deciding which exactly to take is hard! (yes, once you finish the GIRs and many of your major requirements, course selection does become difficult) Thus, pretty much my adviser signed off on the litany of classes I initially put on my schedule and I set off to explore the classes that Ive signed up for (but also many others which I didnt initially anticipate). Yesterday, I attended a total of EIGHT hours of class (one three-hour class, one two-hour class, two 1.5-hour classes). This makes for my most productive day ever since coming to MIT (I didnt even have eight hours of class in one day during high school, lol). This was what it looked like: 9:30 AM 11 AM (7.06 Cell Biology) For me, this is my last Course 7 requirement in the 7.0x string, beginning from 7.01, going through 7.02, 7.03, and 7.05). As customary with the biology core requirements, its a very full class, with many familiar faces from 7.03 and 7.05. The best thing I got out of the first class Prof. Lodish: Biology IS History. (he was trying to tie in how biology is a chain of evolutionary events, just like history is a chronicle of past events). This was really interesting because Im seriously looking into declaring a 21H (history) double major during my remaining semesters here Im going to be taking probably two history courses this semester to explore the department and then making a decision in the spring. 11 AM 1 PM (7.21 Microbial Physiology) So initially, I didnt think I was going to be taking this class, because 1) I know pretty much next to nothing about bacteria except how to grow them in the lab and 2) the course title sounds daunting (how can you have an entire class about microbes?). But after this summer, my friends girlfriend at Berkeley who is a Microbial Biology major told me to give the subject a try, so I went for the first session. The class is interesting since its the smallest biology class Ive been in since coming to MIT, and even among the 40 or so students who are there, it was a 50-50 split between grad and undergrad students! (its a joint grad/undergrad course, I realized later). The class seems to be focused heavily on science literature discussion, which would probably be a departure from the traditional lectured-at biology classes that Ive been in, so maybe I will end up giving this a try. 1 PM 2:30 PM Lunch break so I wouldnt starve. 2:30 PM 4:00 PM (9.01 Intro to Neuroscience) This is the gateway course to the BCS (Brain and Cognitive Science Course 9) department, and thus its usually full of sophomores who are taking the course as their first foray into Course 9. Ive heard a lot of good things about this class from non-course-9 majors whos been through the class, describing the class as engaging and even fun, so I thought I would give it a try, from having taken an onslaught of biology and chem classes since I exited the GIRs. I thought the first class seemed promising, so Ill probably just stick it through and see what happens :) (oh and the class is in the beautiful BCS building (building 46). being in that building always makes me so happy, lol) 4:00 PM 7:00 PM Took the bus to Harvard on an errand, and had a great dinner at the Vietnamese place next to Harvard Square. I must honestly say that all east coast Asian food has paled in comparison that in the Bay, after this summer, sadly but nonetheless, it was still good. :) 7:00 PM 10:00 PM (21H.308 the Vikings) Originally I was going to take 21F.712 (which is like Spanish 5 here), but then this history deal came up and I thought I should look into more history classes this semester, so I signed up for this its a totally different feeling having classes at night, actually. The class itself isnt bad, but I might be looking into another history class since it was a bit of just meh for me. 10:00 PM 12:30 AM Went home, and iHouse had an impromptu Wii party (while we still have the time and energy to before the Great Academic Onslaught), which culminated into me getting wacked by the Wii controller during Wii Boxing and getting a huge bump on my forehead (it didnt really hurt much, but it was crazy how fast it swelled up ). Im afraid that Wii Boxing turned more into Real Life Boxing, haha. (hey at least we didnt break the TV :P) I finished up course shopping today by going to another three classes 9:00 AM 11:00 AM (7.20 Human Physiology) This is an earlyyyyy class! but otherwise, the content seems fascinating actually. Its interesting how MIT would structure a physiology class around the molecular basis, rather than just straight-up memorization. (ie. the class going to explain from a biochemical perspective how parts of your body work rather than making student memorize names to body parts or names of bones). I will probably blog more about the bio major before I graduate, but this just illustrates again that Biology here is really a THINKING major, not the typical run-of-the-mill biology majors you are familiar with (the ones that make you memorize phylum names or trivia like AP Biology). Just like the engineering courses here, the focus is on problem-solving, and I would say the focus is definitely on why? rather than just what? 11:00 AM 12:30 PM (7.30 Ecology I) I signed up for this class because I think itll also be cool to explore ecology, which I briefly touched on after self-studying all of AP Environmental Science in 60 hours during my senior year of high school. -___-;; Unbeknownst to me, I actually stumbled upon a Course 1 CI-M* class. (we have things called CI classes at MIT which stands for Communication Intensive. its basically another way of saying that theres going to be a lot more essay writing in the class, usually ending in some sort of lengthy paper. there are CI-Hs, and CI-Ms. CI-Hs are CIs in the humanities, which you take as part of your HASS (humanities) requirement for graduation. CI-Ms are CI classes in your major, which you have to take two to graduate most CI-Ms in the science majors are lab classes, and your resulting write-up and paper is counted as the CI aspect) There is a major 10-15 paper/project assigned for the course, but I think it may prove to be an interesting challenge, so I guess Ill keep it and see how it goes. As this is also a Course 1 class, theres plenty of 1C (civil engineering) and 1E (environmental engineering) majors in the course, so it was also cool to be in a class with a different crowd. 12:30 PM 1:00 PM Short lunch at Stata. 1:00 PM 2:30 PM (21H.466 Imperial and Revolutionary Russia) This is a tiny class! (7 people) I actually miss these classes a lot from high school, since the two years past then has generally been lectures with 100+ kids even most of my HASSes had 20 or 30. The course content already proves to be pretty engaging so Im definitely looking forward to how this goes in the coming semester. SOOO that concludes all 13 hours of course-shopping, and as you can see thats a total of 84 (127) credits, which is NOT a good idea (but which I can actually technically take since there are surprisingly no scheduling conflicts, lol and I dont even have class on Friday! I dont know how all of this worked out, haha). Im definitely keeping 7.06, 9.01, and 21H.466, dropping 21H.308, most probably keeping 7.30, and either 7.20 or 7.21 (I really want to take 7.20 but I have a pretty full semester, considering Im probably also doing a UROP, so Im not sure whether to drop it (ill be somewhat sad) or stick it through on Pass/D/F (the class is informally known for its difficulty)). Im aiming for 60 credits (5 classes) + UROP, and potentially another history class if I can find one that fits in my schedule and one that Im interested in. In any case, lets hope sleep and sanity isnt a problem this semester :)

Seidman has contributed widely to consti tutional theory through his bestselling book à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"Our Unsettled Constitution: A new Defence of Constitutionalism and Judicial Review à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"(Yale 2001). Drawing heavily from critical legal studies indeterminacy thesis, Seidman supports constitutional disobedience and judicial review because that because the constitution cannot solve political issues in America. Controversies in constitutional law caused by legal review gives an unfair advantage to the losing side to make a different constitutional argument.Seidman suggests that the basic constitutional rights such as equal protection, freedom of speech and religion, equal protection, and embracing due process "remain important, whether embodied in the agreement or not" and says,"we should continue to preserve and uphold those values as essential but not as an obligation, "because political authority is readier to violate such values, often with reference to the majority vote and the idiosyncratic constitution. If t his is not comfortable to embrace "We the people" ruled country will remain a mere dream. As a result,we would be forced to give up our fought fortune of self-governing people who can successfully solve disagreements through intelligent and tolerant way. Before letting our claim go, our pride of people ruling people, we should ignore the hard constitutional bondage so as to give reality and freedom a chance.*2 Seidman reason for bias is the insistence on constitutional obedience with some of the constitutional provisions being idiosyncratic. Successfully, this position is defended by citing relevant examples dating back to United States independence where the constitution has been ignored and goes on to propose that it would be better we recognize the derision for the constitution. But the rapidity with which a person part of the modern culture is accosted by such stimuli is what differentiates his responses. The increasing proximity to his species and in a way that would not have been possible to any of his preceding generations creates a sense of detachment from most stimuli and prevents him from reacting with the same intensity compared to only a few generations earlier. In short, modern culture forces man to react with his head than his heart. This, Simmel argues creates a blase attitude – a defining characteristic of modern culture. â€Å"†¦incapacity to react to new stimulations with the required amount of energy constitutes in fact that blase attitude which every child of a large city evinces hen compared with the products of the more peaceful and more stable milieu† Simmel 14 Advancement in technology creates increased urbanization where people are removed from nature and so closely compressed with one another that their nervous stimulation is hyper excited to become blase. This leads to a state of denial to all other impulses accorded by nature, which are inherently non-quantifiable. Wagner articulates this alienation of Science and nature in more vocal and less scientific terms. Technology, as mentioned earlier is a result of efforts to understand and harness the energies available in nature, acquires arrogance through its practitioners that it tries to rob the soul of all human interactions with nature. â€Å"And truly Science, in her overweening arrogance, has dreamed of such a triumph; as witness our tight-reined State and modern Art, the sexless, barren children of this dream. † This tension between nature and its instincts as expressed in human emotions and the increasing needs of rational responses conditioned by a technology-driven society are reflected in the probing questions of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century literature and art forms. Kafkaesque depictions of society not recognizing its traditional pains and bonds due to the demands of the modern culture are common in most art forms. What could he write about them? What would your typical composer have to say about conductors? Surprisingly, when Stravinsky wrote about conductors he became very critical. Sarcasm and mockery permeate throughout the passage when he discusses them. Stravinsky uses a few schemes to convince his reader of the conductor's insignificance. First, the language Stravinsky uses in his passage is very caustic. In a few places, he goes beyond his arguments into simple denunciations and attacks on the conductors. "The conductor is encouraged to impose a purely egotistical, false, and arbitrary authority, and that he is accorded a position out of all proportion to his real value in the musical, as opposed to the music-business, community," he says in one of such places. It is obvious that Stravinsky holds a personal grudge against the conductors; being a musician, he must have come across them many times. He says, "conducting, like politics, rarely attracts original minds." Stravinsky uses the word "original" in a different way than it is normally used. In English, "original" means first, or new. In Russian, however, to call a person original means to say that he is smart, that he comes with resourceful ideas. Since Stravinsky was Russian, that is what he probably meant. Therefore in his first sentence, Stravinsky say! s that, more or less, almost all conductors are stupid. The whole passage is more of an insult to all conductors, rather than an informative text. Secondly, Stravinsky uses comparisons to politicians in order condemn the conductors. "Conducting, like politics, rarely attracts original minds ? His [the conductor's] first skill has to be power politics," he says in the first paragraph. Politicians are always thought to be corrupt, dishonest, and insidious. In fact, politician is a word that is always associated with something evil. This method of attacking is effective, though primitive; there is a bit of politics in practically every job. Furthermore, Stravinsky fails to note exactly how a conductor is similar to a politician, apart from saying that conducting, like politics, is not a profession for the exact and standardized disciplines. In another quote, he compares the effect of the public on the conductor's ego to the effect the sun has on a tropical weed. Again, this is based more on emotion than cold logic; yet, it manages to convince the reader that conducting is not a profession to be admired. It is clear that St! ravinsky is not appealing to the logic of the reader, but to his emotions. Another strategy Stravinsky uses is sarcasm. He shows a quote naming a conductor to be a "titan of the podium, and is such very nearly the worst obstacle to genuine music making." Furthermore, he names the conductors to be "great," and he discusses the "cult of the great conductor." These names, as opposed to his entire passage, are ironic. After spending an entire passage criticizing conductors and their socalled "greatness," praising them seems satiric. As we have seen from his language and comparisons, it is part of Stravinsky's strategy to undermine the conductors in any way he can, and sarcasm fits well into his plan. The sarcasm is an effective way of criticizing the conductors: Stravinsky even finishes the essay with it in his last sentence "If you are unable to listen to the music, you watch the corybantics, and if you are able, you had better not go to the concert." Most of Stravinsky's argument is based on the fact that people mistake the conductors gestures for the meaning of the music, and place more emphasis on the conductors looks rather than the way he makes music sound. This makes the people think the conductor is "great" while the conductor is actually unfit for his role. This is part of a human tendency to "judge a book by its cover," to formulate an opinion based on what something appears to be, while a closer examination may reveal something different.

The Concept Of Tourism Marketing Marketing Essay The 15 Cs framework was firstly developed by Fyall et al. In 2006 (Destination management: challenges and opportunities-2010 (press release)) to provide a suitable combination of key challenges facing the competitor of that destination marketing and management. But levels will be most important on different destinations. If there is a failure in one of challenges of destination marketing then it will affect the whole plan. The 15 Cs can be identified as: Complexity, Control, Culture, Competition, Commodification, Creativity, Communication, Channels, Cyberspace, Consolidation, Collaboration, Change, Crisis, Customers and Complacency. First we will go on with the complexity factor, were the destination product is not in the argument state and what remains is a discussion about that destination future, it will be more complex due to countless stakeholders from both internal and external or tourist. The complexity of the tourist destination should be taken in consideration with the consumer and community of that place for marketing of it. So, every individual consumers of that destination will have a point of view concerning that the tourist place is cleanly enclose bundle of suppliers as form the case of suppliers expectancy (Buhalis 2000). Control is very closely related to complexity the destination marketers have an inability to control the elements of destination product and also its destiny in market place (Scott, parfitt, and Laws-2000, p.202) the strategic approach should be strong to control the difficulties in coordination in marketing a destination as there are many ways of approaching as campaigns which can be conducted with the help of various tourists business with no public review on the available information. The developments are made to make tourism better in that destination. The power, resources, experience, mutual trust, and respect stand as a significant challenge for those destinations for tourism marketing in future (Ritchie Ritchie, 2002) The cultural factor is most important for both supply and demand in destination marketing. Due to change their will be cultural diversification between private and public sector on tourism destinations. As in change the two cultures will be working together for foreseeable future, the demand side is depends on means of destination what is required for development of tourism. The change can be found everywhere but it is the only one of its kind to the marketing and management of destinations and positively responding to change is increasing day by day. Changes can be in anything prices, commodities, transport, etc. The crises and fear of it is present everywhere across tourism industry on different destinations and as per their location they are impacted in positive or negative or direct or indirect manner it can be natural or manmade. An example we can take is terrorism happening all over world or tsunami. Complacency has changed because customers have other choices of destinations with same features. It increases the competition among organisations in tourism industry. Going on with the competition factor the competition among organisations is increasing and the destinations everywhere are in intense pressure to make their profit and growth from tourism in these difficult years. there is an increase in destination product and in tourist destination. As in European scenario there is a decrease in prices of airlines and other transport but it is beneficial for tourist who goes on that destination. The competition is at its intense level where the natural or manmade disaster occurred and then the population of tourist to that destination is decreased, because of this tourist started to choose secured destinations and for some time the competition in different regions is increased due to same supply of features and facilities. In commodification factor a competition become more intense the market gets crowded and then they become more challengeable and competitive to manage and do marketing of that destination organisation. Due to increase in tourists many destination shares similar facilities and selling point. In response, destination are needed to do hard work to avoid the ease with which they can substituted. One of the primary means from which substitution can be challenged is creativity approach the energetic and different ideas can be used for destination branding. But branding and marketing a destination is not an easy task. All destinations are of different shapes and sizes those are influenced by a distance of political environment so, it makes down the decision making for marketers of that destinations and it makes low creativity in market place. (Caldwell Freire konecnik (2004), Morgan et al. (2002, 2003) and white (2004)). If the brand is properly identified and marketed with good creativity it will be on good position in competitive market. An advertisement in many regions of world is done through news paper but in some many different regions or parts of world the communication is important and is required on highly basis for highly educated and increasingly sophisticated clientele. The use of Web, blogs, online social networking like facebook and twitter is increased but the high percentage on marketing budget is spent on print based media like brochures and leaflets (Dore and Crouch 2003; Foley and Fahy 2004). The channel and cyberspace are closely related with each other as they are most important factor for tourism marketing and for distributing of the ideas or creativity of marketers of that destination. In consolidation factor we can take an example of Thomas cook there is a significant increase in recent years across the globe. This is strongly affected to tourism industry by the means of travel in form of airlines, hospitality in largely international and local groups, money exchange, etc. One means of marketing where corporate or marketers come face to face for collaboration within or among destinations. Customers can be from same region or from all over the globe with different religions and language like British, Indian, French, Chinese, etc. and they can be also of different age groups. Dubai is well known for its oil resource but it is finite and it is a main resource that gives an income to the country which will help to develop tourism industry. Dubai gives many facilities and has many attractions to attract tourist.
